The University of Pittsburgh is\u00a0part of a new $15 million initiative from the American Heart Association<\/a>\u00a0to improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart valve disease through the Strategically Focused Research Network on Earlier Detection and Delaying Progression of Valvular Heart Disease.<\/p>\n

Cynthia St. Hilaire, associate professor of medicine\u00a0(Division of Cardiology), School of Medicine, will lead the\u00a0Center for Aortic Valve Disease Prediction and Integrated Research\u00a0as its director and part of the four-year award. The center will collaborate with teams at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts,\u00a0and Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska,\u00a0for three projects focused on the prediction, disease pathogenesis and treatment of aortic stenosis, the narrowing of the aortic valve. The condition commonly develops\u00a0during aging as calcium or scarring damages the valve and limits the amount of blood\u00a0flowing through.<\/p>\n

The center aims to link\u00a0lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), a genetic blood factor that increases aortic stenosis risk, to disease progression and develop predictive models using machine learning;\u00a0define\u00a0how\u00a0Lp(a), inflammation\u00a0and\u00a0heart\u00a0biomechanics combine to drive disease in laboratory settings; and, lastly, understand\u00a0how Lp(a) initiates calcification of valve cells and develop treatments that block these processes.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that high\u00a0Lp(a) increases the risk of aortic stenosis, but it doesn\u2019t tell the whole story,\u201d St. Hilaire said. \u201cMany people with elevated\u00a0Lp(a) never develop valve disease, which tells us other forces are at play. Inflammation, abnormal valve\u00a0motion\u00a0and disrupted blood flow\u00a0may\u00a0act together with blood-based risk factors to damage the valve over time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The center\u00a0utilizes\u00a0machine learning, realistic valve motion and flow models,\u00a0and a new screening platform to study cellular reprogramming and potential\u00a0inhibitors,\u00a0capturing interactions often missed in standard experiments.\u00a0The center\u2019s goal\u00a0is to\u00a0move aortic stenosis care away from late-state surgery, which is normally the only\u00a0option\u00a0for treatment.<\/p>\n

Two more centers led by researchers at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital\u00a0Medical\u00a0Center\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0part of the initiative.<\/p>\n

The first September that I was a new faculty member I was riding the bus home and overheard two first year medical students discussing how one goes about finding a research lab. I turned around and handed them by card and said, I’m looking for students. A few months later Pouya emailed me and soon joined our team. He graduated May 2019, and his excellent research was recognized with an Outstanding Longitudinal Research Project Award!. He is now off to Wash U in St. Louis for his residency. Contratulations Pouya!\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n
